On Monday, December 1, 2025, security forces faced significant challenges in maintaining order outside the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi during the ongoing mediation efforts aimed at resolving the long-running Bawku chieftaincy dispute. Tensions flared as factions involved in the conflict clashed during the proceedings, prompting swift action from both the police and military to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.
Heightened security measures were put in place at all major entry points to the palace, with officers and military personnel stationed to prevent further escalation after one faction reportedly began celebrating prematurely during the mediation discussions. The cause of the disturbance remains unclear, but the situation grew tense as both sides jockeyed for position amid the delicate negotiations.
The increase in security comes ahead of a crucial and long-awaited ruling from the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is expected to deliver his final decision on the Bawku chieftaincy conflict later that day. This ruling is seen as the final step in a mediation process that has been ongoing for months. The Asantehene was tasked by former President John Dramani Mahama in 2025 to lead efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution to the decades-old dispute.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s involvement in the mediation process began in April 2025 when he held talks with representatives from both factions in a series of meetings that took place from April 28 to 30. These discussions marked a turning point in the long-standing conflict, offering hope for a peaceful settlement after years of violence and tension in the Bawku area.

Accompanying the Kusaasi delegation at the palace on Monday were several prominent figures, including Garu MP Thomas Winsum Anabah, Binduri MP Ebenezer Alumire Ndebilla, former NPP MP for Binduri Issifu Mahamoud, and former parliamentary candidates from Zebilla. Local officials also played a key role, with the District Chief Executives (DCEs) for Zebilla and Garu, as well as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bawku Central, all in attendance.
As the day progressed, security personnel worked to contain the situation, ensuring that any flare-ups were swiftly addressed. The outcome of the mediation, which is expected to provide a final resolution to the Bawku chieftaincy crisis, is seen as a pivotal moment in the region’s efforts to restore peace and stability.
With the military now deployed and tensions running high, all eyes are on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s ruling, which many hope will bring an end to the decades-long conflict and pave the way for lasting peace in Bawku.
