The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has appealed to the rival factions involved in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict to commit to lasting peace, reminding them that they are “one people” who must continue to live together regardless of the final outcome of the ongoing mediation process.
His remarks followed a rare joint meeting on Monday, December 1, 2025, where representatives of both the Mamprugu and Kusasi communities faced each other at the Jubilee Hall of the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. The gathering came after months of separate engagements aimed at finding a sustainable resolution to the long-standing crisis.
The discussions were marked by calmness and cooperation, with both groups openly conceding that the violence in Bawku has no justifiable basis. The Asantehene praised their posture, describing their respectful and mature approach as a promising sign for the peace efforts.
He encouraged the leaders to start guiding their followers toward peaceful coexistence, stressing that Bawku’s future depends on a shared commitment to reject conflict and rebuild trust.
“No matter what this mediation yields, you will still have to live together as brothers and sisters,” Otumfuo stated, urging an end to the cycle of violence and suspicion that has destabilized the area for years.
The Asantehene is expected to present his mediation report—along with key recommendations—to President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days, after which broader consultations with stakeholders are expected to follow.
