Hamza Suhuyini, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) publicity team, has described former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) strongest candidate for leadership in the next 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, June 18, Suhuyini expressed concern that Dr. Bawumia’s chances and the larger chance for political regeneration under his leadership could be jeopardized by internal power battles within the NPP.
“Whatever way you look at it, the initiative to organise an early congress is simply driven by the motivation to control, not an opportunity to rebuild and ensure transformation in the politics of the NPP. And that is why I feel that this party under this current leadership seems to be doing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia so much harm,” he stated.
Regardless of the date of the party’s congress, Suhuyini recognized Dr. Bawumia’s advantage over other candidates despite being an opposition figure.
“From where I sit, you can turn the As up or down, whether congress is held today or a year from now, I know that Dr. Bawumia is in a better position to lead the NPP than any of the contenders, in all honesty,” he remarked.
Additionally, he advised Dr. Bawumia to maintain his vigilance and not allow political handlers to undermine the confidence that may be placed in him.
“He must learn useful lessons. He must not allow these guys to destroy the responsibility that the party will entrust to him to reform. And this is harmless advice to him,” Suhuyini added that he would be “hugely surprised” if Bawumia is not chosen to lead the party into the 2028 polls.
Following NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah’s statement that the party’s presidential primaries will be held on January 31, 2026, his comments follow suit.
The National Council later approved the date that the party’s constitution review committee had suggested.
Frimpong Koduah explained that since the National Council has the power to establish such deadlines, the decision is final and does not need the consent of a delegates’ conference.
