Former member of parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has thrown her support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as she urges delegates to give Dr. Bawumia the chance to lead the party to victory in 2028 as she believes he’s the best man to lead the New Patriotic Party.
According to her, Dr. Bawumia is the most qualified candidate among the four others vying to be the flagbearer of the party.
Dr. Bawumia did not have the power to overturn decisions made at the highest level of government, she continued.
“He was only the driver’s mate and could not overrule the driver, even if the driver was not performing well,” she said.
She stated that Dr Bawumia should not be held exclusively responsible for the party’s economic problems, emphasizing that his decision-making power was restricted.
Addressing some NPP delegates, Adwoa Safo emphasized the role of other key officials, including former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, in setting economic policy.
“Was Dr Bawumia the finance minister? Were we not in government when some MPs said, because of the way our economy is being mismanaged, we should change the finance minister did we? Didn’t he damage everything before he was changed, so how can we blame this on Bawumia?”
Her remarks come after some flagbearer candidates in the current NPP presidential primary criticized Dr. Bawumia for the party’s economic performance while in power.
Prior to the upcoming general elections, the NPP plans to choose its presidential candidate on January 31, 2026. Five candidates are vying for the position of flagbearer, including Dr. Bawumia.
