It is often said that if you are able to sail through an election in the New Patriotic Party, you can accomplish any herculean task assigned to you at any point in time and I cannot agree more because of the hectic and competitive nature of the internal politics of our party.
The story of Mr Kingsley Ohene Amoako, the Secretary of Tro-bu constituency in the Greater Accra Region, offers great inspiration and deserves to be told.
Mr Ohene Amoako is a former Secretary of the then Trobu-Amasaman constituency and he distinguished himself in that capacity with aplomb. Upon expiration of his tenure of office, he decided to move a notch higher to contest for the Chairmanship of the carved out Tro-bu constituency but he lost, unfortunately.
The defeat did not cause him to shy away from the party’s activities in the constituency. He kept faith with the party and continued to protect and promote the party anywhere he found himself. This endeared him to a lot of party faithful in the constituency.
Another opportunity presented itself in the 2018 constituency elections and Mr Ohene Amoako, upon recommendations and advice from polling station executives, decided to contest again as secretary. What was expected to be a walk in the park for him ended as another defeat, to the surprise of many.
He still stayed true to the ideals of the party and even served in both the regional and national communication teams of the party. This was a masterstroke because it caused his popularity to soar.
Now, to the recently conducted constituency elections. Mr Ohene Amoako braced himself to contest the incumbent secretary who defeated him in 2018. He approached this election knowing very well that he was up against it. The odds were not in his favour because he lacked the wherewithal to back his campaign. He had no party bigwig supporting his candidacy thus, he had to pursue the election with a potent message that would resonate with the delegates of the constituency.
He couched a message that placed emphasis on unity and accountability; traits that were not inherent in his opponent. He pursued his campaign meticulously to the admiration of all. He delivered his message of hope to the polling station executives who were dispirited because things had really gone south in the constituency.
His campaign was not financially sound but the confidence and conviction with which he articulated his message made him the standard among two other contenders. It was therefore not surprising that the delegates of the Tro-bu constituency endorsed him with an impressive 675 votes as against the incumbent’s 522 and 154 votes for the other opponent.
It is trite knowledge that funding is an essential tool in political campaigning. However, the story of Mr Ohene Amoako should inspire the young men and women in our party that there would be highs and lows in the political terrain but perseverance should always be the watchword and in the event of abundant or scarce financial resources, the premium must also be placed on the campaign message and should be delivered to the electorates convincingly.
