Tension is blowing at Begoro in the Fanteakwa North municipality of the Eastern Region as a result of activities of Fulani herdsmen harassing farmers in the district.
The Regional Security Committee (REGSEC), as well as the National Security, have been appealed to, to intervene in the matter before it escalates into chaos.
The Regent of Begoro, Osabarima Bosompem Ayiripe II disclosed this in an interview with the media at Ghana’s 63rd-anniversary parade held at Begoro, the district capital on Friday.
According to the Chief, influx of nomadic Fulani herdsmen into the area poses a major threat to the security within the district as most farmers have been complaining stray cattle are destroying their farm produce.
He mentioned that the youth in the area have on several occasions attempted to respond to the illegal activities of these Fulani herdsmen, but insisted the traditional council has been trying to succumb to the anger of residents but questioned when such intervention can be sustained without government’s action.
Osabarima Bosompem Ayiripe II also complained about the occasional cases of armed robbery attacks on road users between Osiem-Begoro-Ahomamu and other communities within the district which is disturbing activities of residents.
However, the District Police Commander, DSP Emmanuel Darkwah Owiredu, responding to the request of the traditional council emphasized that the police has initiated a strategy whereby road users, especially market women are accompanied to market centers both in the day and at night to ensure traders are secured from the attacks of these robbers.
He, also, advised the public to desist from any act of violence that could negatively affect the peace of the country before, during and after the 20202 general elections.
DSP Darkwah Owiredu added that his outfit is expecting delivery of equipment and other relevant materials from the police hierarchy to ensure that, the country experiences incident-free elections this year.
