On Bryt FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show, hosted by Kwamina Sam Baney, Hon. Bernard Bediako, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Akwatia, shared his vision for the constituency’s development. Hon. Bediako, who is also a lawyer, expressed gratitude to God and the people of Akwatia for entrusting him with the mandate to represent them in Parliament.
According to him, one of his top priorities is reviving Akwatia’s mining sector, which has faced major setbacks in recent years. He emphasized that the day mining activities were halted in Akwatia marked the beginning of economic hardship for many residents. “If care is not taken, Akwatia could collapse,” he warned, noting that the Ghana Consolidated Diamonds Company Limited – once the hub for Ghana’s diamond industry – has virtually ceased operations.
He further stated that under the President John Mahama, electricity was restored to several parts of Akwatia after a period of disconnection, which brought some relief to residents. The next focus, according to Hon. Bediako, is reviving the Ghana Consolidated Diamonds Company (GCD) to create sustainable jobs. “If GCD is restored and able to employ even 2,000 young people, it will be a major achievement and a big step toward reducing unemployment,” he said.
Hon. Bediako also mentioned plans to improve infrastructure, including roads, schools, and hospitals, stressing that employment creation remains his top priority. He expressed particular concern about the future of legal small-scale mining (galamsey) activities, which many young men and women in the constituency depend on for survival.
He concluded by saying that with his party in power, he is hopeful that the support he needs from government will be provided to help him bring meaningful development to Akwatia.
