What began as a quiet birthday celebration in Kumasi turned into a law enforcement operation as former GIHOC Distilleries Managing Director, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, was arrested and transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra.
Jumah, who led the state-owned distillery until recently, was picked up by police on Sunday, June 29, at a private residence where he was celebrating his birthday. His arrest is part of a widening investigation into alleged financial misconduct during his tenure at GIHOC.
After his initial detention at the Ashanti Regional Police Command, he was escorted to Accra for further questioning by CID officials.
The probe into Jumah’s dealings reportedly centers on unauthorized sales of company assets and the suspicious acquisition of vehicles under his administration. The latest move by investigators follows a failed attempt on May 15 to retrieve state-owned vehicles allegedly still in his possession—an effort that was thwarted when Jumah was not found at his residence.
Sources close to the case suggest that the former executive may face charges related to mismanagement of public property and abuse of office.
The Ghana Police Service has yet to issue a formal statement on the charges but confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
As the case unfolds, it is expected to reignite debate around accountability in state enterprises and raise broader concerns about asset misappropriation in the public sector.
