The New Patriotic Party (NPP) -Japan branch has described it as unfortunate, reactions of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in connection with the Airbus bribery scandal.
In a statement, the Japan branch of the party is surprised the NDC, instead of bowing down in shame and cooperate with authorities to delve deeper into the matter, is rather denying the bribery claim as ruled by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The branch is also commending President Akufo-Addo for assigning the Special Prosecutor to investigate and determine the veracity or otherwise of any Ghanaian government official in the bribery allegations.
The statement signed by the Acting Communication Director, Kwaku Adu, urged Ghanaians to vote massively for President Akufo-Addo and the NPP in the December general elections.
The statement below:
NPP-Japan Branch Lambasts Mills/Mahama Administration In The Airbus Scandal
NPP-Japan branch has been following with keen interest the accusations of bribery and corruption involving the European airplane maker Airbus in the purchase of three military planes between 2009 and 2015 when the National Democratic Congress party (NDC) was in government.
We were not surprised to wake up to hear that Ghana is among over a dozen countries involved in a $4 billion settlement Airbus agreed with European and American regulators with respect to bribes to clinch sales of its planes because of the corrupt nature of the then NDC government.
It was disclosed by Britain’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) that Airbus hired and disguised about 5 million euros as payment to a close relative of a government official in no other country than our beloved country-Ghana, and it is very sad and shameful to hear that this official was said to have no aerospace experience in connection with the sale of the said aircraft. Interestingly, the disclosures of this horrific and barbaric bribery allegation that took place during the Mills/Mahama administration were made known to the public after a 4-year investigation by both Britain and the US authorities.
The NPP-Japan branch was expecting the NDC to bow down in shame and cooperate with the appropriate Ghanaian authority to dive deeper into this scandalous act, rather, the party has denied the bribery claims in a statement issued just two days after the investigation was made public.
The NDCs denial statement ridicules the British leading court that slapped the European aviation giant a fine of £3 billion as it accuses the company of paying millions of dollars in bribes in exchange for high value and juicy contracts.
The Airbus scandal is an embarrassment for an emerging country like Ghana and our image on a global scale, this matter has a high potential of bringing our nation’s glorious image down. Though an investigation has been launched into the allegation, we condemn this act perpetrated by the then NDC corrupt government because as the old adage goes “there’s a little truth in every rumor”. We are, therefore, calling for the names of the people involved in the Airbus scandal to be made public so that Ghanaians would know the evil people behind this unfortunate scandal.
The NPP-Japan branch would like to commend the Nana Addo-led government for assigning the Special Prosecutor to conduct a prompt inquiry to determine the veracity or otherwise of any Ghanaian government official, past or present in this bribery allegation.
On this note, we are calling on Ghanaian to vote massively for the Nana Addo/Bawumia-led government to continue to push the nation into prosperity as it puts plans to change the destiny of this resource-endowed nation. Vote for Nana, 4 more years to do more for Ghana.
