An unidentified man has allegedly committed suicide by hanging at Akyem old Tafo cemetery in Abuakwa North Municipality in Eastern region.
The man was found hanging on a tree at the cemetery Thursday morning.
He was wearing jeans and shirt.
Akyem Tafo Police were yet to remove the body from the tree to the morgue at the time of filing the report .
Suicide continue to be a serious public health concern in Ghana.
For instance , according to the Mental Health Unit of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) a total of 417 suicide-related deaths were recorded across the country in 2021.
“first half of the year 2021 has witnessed higher records of attempted suicide cases across the country with total of 417 recorded deaths”. Faustina Nuako a mental health Coordinator said.
The Eastern Region recorded 61 cases which comes second to Ashanti Region which despite its higher population recorded 61 cases.
Upper East region was third with 47 cases followed by Greater Accra-37 ,Central region-37 ,Volta region–35
Oti region–22,Bono East–21 ,Western North-17 ,Upper west –17 ,North east–16 ,Western region-14 ,Ahafo region-11 ,Bono region–16 ,Northern region–4
and Savannah-3.
Majority of the victims were youth .
Suicide is however, suicides are preventable with timely, evidence-based and often low-cost interventions.
For national responses to be effective, a comprehensive multisectoral suicide prevention strategy is needed, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
