The New Patriotic Party (NPP) finds itself at a defining moment in its history as the presidential primaries intensify. Contestations of this nature are often accompanied by passionate debates, strong opinions, and regrettably, unhealthy political exchanges. Yet, amidst the turbulence of recent developments, Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Member of Parliament for the Abetifi Constituency and presidential hopeful, has emerged as a beacon of restraint, maturity, and vision.
The statement issued by Dr. Bryan Acheampong on Tuesday, 26th August 2025, titled “A Call to Unity and Discipline in Our Internal Contest” stands out as a demonstration of true statesmanship. In his words, “the strength of our great party, the NPP, has never come from division. It has always come from discipline, dignity, and unity.” This is not just a response to the moment, but a timeless reminder of the values that have anchored the Party’s growth and resilience over the decades.
Dr. Bryan’s acknowledgment of the barrage of attacks and falsehoods against him, coupled with his decision to remain focused on restoration rather than retaliation, reveals a rare quality of leadership. As he candidly stated, “Yes, I have come under a barrage of attacks. Falsehoods have been spread about me. Fake materials have been shared to question my character. But through it all, I remain focused, not on retaliation, but on restoration.” It is easy to descend into the trenches of insults and counterattacks in a heated contest; it takes a leader with depth, emotional intelligence, and vision to rise above.
His appeal to his supporters was equally striking: “I respectfully call on all who support me to refrain from intemperate language, personal attacks, and the circulation of false materials. Let us not mirror the tactics we seek to rise above.” This was not just a personal defense but a call to elevate the tone of our politics and to demonstrate that the NPP remains a Party anchored on ideas and vision, not division.
This display of humility and discipline should not go unnoticed. It reflects the kind of leadership the NPP and Ghana need as we prepare for the future. Dr. Bryan correctly frames this contest not as a mere competition of personalities, but as a “contest of ideas, of leadership, and of vision of power in focus. And it must be treated with the respect it deserves.” By urging his followers to let their words heal, not harm, and to let their actions inspire, not inflame, he captures the very essence of transformational leadership.
As the NPP looks beyond the primaries toward the 2028 General Elections, the need for a unifying, visionary, and disciplined candidate becomes ever more urgent. Dr. Bryan Acheampong has demonstrated that leadership is not only about winning internal contests but about building bridges, inspiring trust, and safeguarding the collective strength of the Party. His declaration that “we are building something far greater than a campaign. We are building a movement to unite and rebuild our beloved New Patriotic Party” offers hope and direction at this crucial moment.
In celebrating his message, we are reminded that political victory is sustainable only when rooted in unity and guided by principles. Dr. Bryan’s statesmanlike posture projects him as the ideal candidate to lead the NPP into the next phase of its journey; a leader who understands that our words and actions today will shape the Ghana we seek to build tomorrow.
Indeed, in his own words: “Together, we unite. Together, we rebuild.” That is the kind of leadership the NPP must rally behind.
