Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, all junta-led states, have withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) with immediate effect.
This comes after 49 years of existence in the regional bloc.
The leaders of the three Sahel nations issued a statement saying it was a “sovereign decision” to leave the Economic Community of West African States “without delay.”
