The Central East Regional Police Command has arrested a man being enstooled as a Chief, together with 22 other Suspects after the installation turned chaotic with gunshots.
The incident occurred at Yamoah Nkwanta in the central region after the faction in a Chieftaincy dispute defied police order and went ahead to enstool Teacher Oluu as chief despite the tension in the community.
Police retrieved a pump-action gun, foreign-made pistol, 4 empty cartridges, and 4 ammunition.
The Central East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Okyere Boapeah Kojo told Bryt Fm News Correspondent Eric Owusu Amponsah, a swift intervention by police averted bloodshed as the two factions engaged in a gun battle during the enstoolment.
“We got wind that there was going to be enstoolment of a chief at Yamoah Nkwanta which was likely to bring chaos in the area. So the Police command invited the parties involved to the Regional headquarters two weeks ago. we deliberated on the matter and they agreed to hold on until their differences are resolved”.
He continued that, “but just this morning about 6:30pm that we heard that the installation was ongoing but has resulted in serious Mayhem and gunshots. Men were dispatched to the scene and noticed the gun battle in the community.
The Police Commander observed that chieftaincy disputes in the region remain a major security threat however police have rolled out interventions to manage the situation.
“In central region here, apart from Land guard issues, chieftaincy dispute is the next security threat”.He concluded.
