Patronisers of local gin popularly referred to as ‘Akpeteshie’, in the Central Region have threatened to demonstrate against President Akufo-Addo over current economic hardship Ghanaians are experiencing.
Speaking in an interview with the media, some of the aggrieved persons in the Mfantseman municipality said the volume of akpeteshie they used to take has reduced drastically over it’s price hikes and economic hardship.
They complained that the local gin is now sold at a least amount of Ghc2 instead of the previous Ghc1 and even sometimes Ghc0.50 pesewas.
However, they are threatening to boycott the intake of the substance should government fail to ensure prices of products and alcohol is well regulated.
They also revealed the economy is hard to extend that they cannot buy the local gin and drink to their satisfaction as compared to the past.
“We are appealing to the Government to help reduce price of akpeteshie because we can no longer drink to our satisfaction as we used to do. We also contribute to the national financial basket and therefore deserve to be heard” some aggrieved patronisers of the local gin complained.
Their call comes few weeks after marijuana smokers also complained about increase in prices of the drug, despite its illegal status.
