In a heartbreaking incident, Mr. Samuel Kwame Afezei, believed to be around 50 years old, lost his life after being electrocuted while working on the third floor of a building near a high-tension power lines and an ECG transformer in Twifo Praso Zongo in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region.
Speaking in an engagement with journalists, Assembly Member for the Zongo-Anogyan Electoral Area, Hon. Richmond Banny, revealed that concerns about the safety of the construction site had been raised long before this tragic event.
He had previously alerted the ECG management and the district engineer about the potential dangers posed by the building’s proximity to high-voltage wires and equipment. Unfortunately, despite his warnings, construction continued.
According to Banny, the situation was exacerbated by political affiliations; the store owner was reportedly connected to the NDC party, which is currently in power. This perceived influence led to a lack of action against the construction work despite ongoing safety concerns.
The incident, which occurred around noon, has instigated fear among tenants occupying the first and second floors of the building.
Allegations have emerged suggesting that bribes may have been exchanged between local officials and the store owner, enabling the construction to proceed despite the risks involved.
In light of this tragedy, Hon. Richmond Banny has called on the Twifo Atti Morkwa District Chief Executive to intervene and implement necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, ensuring the safety of residents and workers alike.
