A 12-year old boy Samuel Ofosu has met his untimely death several weeks after a dog bite at Awutu Beraku in the Awutu Senya West district of the Central region.
According to the deceased mother, Yaa Tiwaa, her daughter died from rabbies per doctor’s report.
Explainig her ordeal to Eric Owusu Amponsah, the mother of the deceased revealed her son died a month after the dog bite after failing to buy a medicine prescribed by the doctor after injecting the deceased with a first aid.
“The doctor gave him injection at his wrist and later prescribed a medicine for us to buy. The doctor told me the medicine could cost about Ghc1,500 but I was not having such an amount so I could not buy. I thought the earlier injection would heal my son” Yaa Tiwaa told the reporter.
The mother however, indicated the deceased suddenly started compalinig again about a month later so “I took him to a hospital for check up and I was told the poison has extended to his haert a that the possibility of living is uncertain. Unfortunately, my son fell asleeep and never woke up again and was later pronounced dead”.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports says the death of the young boy makes it two persons who have died from the possible rabbies outbreak in the district as the mother indicated there have been several cases where some are currently receiving treatment at Korle-Bu Teaching hospital in Accra.
Efforts to reach the District Health Directorate at the time of filling the report proved futile as the Health Director and the Disease Control officer were not at the office to speak on the issue.
