As a highly infectious new strain of the coronavirus spreads in southern Africa, the medical organisation, Médecins Sans Frontières, has called for vaccines to be distributed more equitably worldwide.
The charity said it would be indefensible if some countries moved to immunise lower-risk citizens while many countries in Africa were yet to vaccinate their first frontline health workers.
MSF said medical staff in Mozambique, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Malawi were struggling to treat rising numbers of patients.
The agency said there was little clarity on when they would receive a vaccine to protect them from the virus.
