Cameroonian president Paul Biya turns 90 today.
He is the world’s oldest head of state, and second-longest ruler.
Only Teodoro Obiang of Equatorial Guinea has been in power for longer than Biya.
Born in 1933 – the year Adolf Hitler took power in Germany – Biya took over power in Cameroon in 1982, long before technology such as the internet or cellphones existed.
He has routinely won every election since, but the credibility of those polls is often questioned.
Biya has also been criticized for spending significant time abroad, staying in luxury hotels in Europe, while many believe Cameroon’s economic and political problems, which include a secessionist movement and a precarious security situation, require urgent attention.
