The Government of Ghana in collaboration with all Stakeholders has for the first time announced the long-awaited cashew minimum producer/buying price, a pronouncement which has been met with mixed reactions from farmers and buyers.
This was at a short ceremony at Wenchi in the Bono region the same place where H.E. Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo President of Ghana in 2020 launched the “10year Cashew Development Plan” and was attended by Government officials and all actors/stakeholders in the cashew production chain drawn from Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Western regions and other cashew growing areas of the country.
Earlier in his welcome address, Hon. William Agyapong Quaittoo, Chief Executive Officer of the Tree Crops Development Authority touching on the formula used and consultations were done before arriving at the minimum price called on farmers and traders to accept the Government’s decision in order to improve the cashew production sector.
Hon. Yaw Frimpong Addo, Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture (in charge of Crops) and MP for Manso Adubia constituency in the Ashanti region on behalf of his Boss Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto the Minister of Food and Agriculture announced the cashew minimum producer price for the 2022 crop season which has been pegged at Ghc5 per one (1) kilogram.
Meanwhile, the price announcement was welcomed with mixed reactions from farmers and buyers; Mr Alex Owusu Agyei (National Chairman of Cashew Traders and Exporters Association of Ghana) and Mr Clement Anane National (Secretary of Ghana Cashew Farmers Association) both spoke to the media and commended government for the initiative.
