The issue of illegal mining commonly known as Galamsey has recently being on the rise and in view of that the Catholic Archdiocese in Accra has embarked on a peaceful protest walk against the menace after a “Service of preparation “, this was held at the Holy Spirit Cathedral.
Today, October 11, 2024, environmental activists and Catholic worshipers from all over the capital are participating in the demonstration walk.
Gathering at the cathedral, worshippers, environmentalists, “crusaders against Galamsey” group members, and police provided guidance for a nonviolent demonstration while carrying signs urging an end to illicit mining.
Following his speech to the congregation, Rev. Father Godwin Fiawoyi, SVD, called for action to stop unlawful mining’s detrimental effects on the environment.
In order to save Ghana’s natural riches, he urged people to show courage.
The leader of the “crusaders against Galamsey” organization, Emmanuel Wilson Jr., focused on the president’s attempt to put a temporary end to Galamsey rather than a permanent one.
An unnamed reverend father who claimed to be an environmentalist stated that the protest is driven more by a religious desire to preserve Ghanaian property for future generations than by political motivations.
