Breast cancer is a major contributor to cancer-related deaths among women worldwide, despite the numerous measures employed to prevent and manage the disease.
Throughout the world, breast cancer (BC) has been identified as a major public health problem and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women, particularly in low-resourced regions of the world.
This, according to Ghana COCOBOD, has seen the need to engage women in the Western North Region particularly those in Sefwi Bekwai, in the Bibiani Anhwianso Bekwai Municipality to get more insight into the dangers of breast cancer and to help them get their quota for the cocoa industry and to allow their cocoa farms to be rehabilitated due to the swollen shoot disease.
Speaking with Kwame Kontor Boateng Lord FM, Mrs. Anita Payne, a nurse at Sefwi Bekwai health center stated that October has been slated for breast cancer awareness month and to help educate women to protect and detect the irregular lamp as early as possible to avail themselves for treatment or if it is beyond their control, they can refer them to the region to take care of the breast cancer patients.
She said the health department’s engagement with the women is to advise them to take the needed health diet and the fear of not availing themselves to be treated.
Ms. Vera Elletey, the technical assistant of Sefwi Bekwai cocoa health and extension division officer at Sefwi Ashiam added that most cocoa farms in the Ashiam area have been affected by the swollen shoot disease, but they have been able to rehabilitate a lot of farms but will rather appeal to the women in cocoa cooperatives to release their land for the program.
Some of the women who were at the public education grounds organized by COCOBOD to know the dangers in breast cancer and cocoa rehabilitation also express their views as they are also going to spread the news to their communities.
