Coffin makers in Ghana are calling on the government to establish a factory under the one district, one factory (1D1F) policy to revive their dying business.
In an interview with Akosua Asabea Kropah on Bryt FM news, the Association complained of low sales of coffins despite the global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the death of many people.
He attributed it to the influx of Chinese coffins on the Ghanaian market even though it is costly and also seen as inferior as compared to the ones produced locally.
Secretary to the Coffin Makers Association, Effah Poku stressed that establishing a factory will help employ many people and that would gradually boost production to stand any competition.
“My sister, can you imagine coffins from China are inferior but yet still Ghanaians have interest in patronizing them rather than our local ones that are cheaper. Well, polished coffin cost GHc5,000.00 while those from China cost not less than ghc10,000.00” Mr. Effah Poku revealed.
On the issue of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly relocating coffin makers in Kumasi, he chastised city authorities for failing to find a place for them before asking them to leave.
