Last Friday, January 3, 2024, during President Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address, Colonel Isaac Amponsah, the personal bodyguard cum Aid De-Camp (ADC) to Nana Addo Danquah collapsed in parliament, drawing widespread concern.
Speaking on Bryt FM’s Adekye Mu Nsem, Mr. Emmanuel Amanor discussed the incident with Kwamina Sam Biney, addressing potential causes and preventative measures.
Mr. Amanor explained that fainting typically occurs when the brain temporarily does not receive enough blood, leading to a brief loss of consciousness.
He advised that in such situations, the individual should be positioned on their back with their legs elevated about 12 inches to improve blood flow to the brain.
Tight clothing should also be loosened to facilitate proper circulation.
He emphasized that if the person does not regain consciousness within a minute, emergency services should be contacted immediately.
He pointed out common triggers for fainting, such as low blood pressure, dehydration, heat, and malnutrition, urging individuals to stay hydrated and avoid skipping meals.
Mr. Amanor also recommended that the government ensure the presence of medical professionals, including the Red Cross, at all major public events such as the State of the Nation Address, swearing-in ceremonies, and other official gatherings to handle emergencies effectively.
In conclusion, Mr. Amanor advised the general public to avoid consuming chemically processed foods and to drink plenty of water to support kidney function, reinforcing the importance of good health practices for preventing such incidents.
