The Pokuase–Nsawam road is in terrible condition and dangerous for drivers, commuters, and locals, according to commercial transport companies who are calling for immediate repairs.
In a statement released on August 14, the operators claimed that the road’s terrible state had rendered it all but impassable and that regular vehicle maintenance, replacement of spare parts, and shorter vehicle lifespans had increased operating costs.
They pointed out that the situation disrupts daily life and economic activity and impacts not only commercial drivers but all drivers going to destinations in the Ashanti, Eastern, and other northern areas.
The operators claim that they just met with the Minister of Roads and Highways, who promised to restore the road to a satisfactory state in six weeks. But they claimed that nothing had changed by the deadline.
The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, and other transportation organizations have told the government a week to take “meaningful action” or risk a protest that will result in their cars being parked forever.
In an effort to force authorities to take action, they are also urging drivers, commuters, and locals who are impacted by the state of the road to participate in the demonstration.
