Pius Enam Hadzide, a parliamentary candidate hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Asuogyaman in the Eastern Region of Ghana, is calling for the early conduct of parliamentary primaries, particularly in constituencies without incumbent MPs (referred to as “orphan constituencies”). He argues that the delay in holding these elections is causing financial strain on the individual aspirants and affecting the chances of potential candidates for the 2024 parliamentary primaries.
Hadzide believes that conducting the primaries earlier would allow the elected parliamentary candidates to engage in various campaign activities, including attending events like funerals, weddings, church programs, and other community gatherings. This active participation in local events would help them build support in the 137 orphan constituencies across the country, ultimately benefiting the presidential candidate of the NPP.
He also emphasizes the importance of giving equal attention to parliamentary primaries in constituencies held by opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament, rather than focusing solely on the presidential primaries.
Pius Enam Hadzide said this on Asempa FM’s Ekossi Sen political show on Wednesday.
In the upcoming parliamentary primaries in Asuogyaman Constituency, Pius Enam Hadzide, Nana Abrokwa Asare, and Paul Ansah are contesting for the NPP’s candidacy.
The incumbent NDC MP, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, has been in office since 2016 and is seeking a third term. In the 2020 elections, Thomas Ampem Nyarko secured 24,439 votes (51.3%), while Paul Asare Ansah of the NPP received 23,201 votes (48%), but was unsuccessful in unseating the incumbent.
