The ongoing registration exercise by the National Identification Authority (NIA)in the Eastern Region has been suspended, according to unconfirmed reports available to mybrytfmonline.com.
The exercise, which started on the 4th march, 2020 was expected to be completed on the 27th March 2020, has been halted due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic across the country.
President Akufo-Addo on Sunday, 15th March 2020 ordered for a temporary ban on all public activities, being public or private as a measure in ensuring the disease does not spread.
Bryt FM reporter, Kwabena Nyarko Abronoma, touring some registration centers in the region around 9am, saw many centers closed down due to the earlier directive by the President.
Some Registration Officers confirmed the suspension of the exercise is a measure by authorities of the NIA in ensuring the disease does not spread to other people as part of their activities.
The Ghana Health Service on Sunday afternoon revealed six cases of the disease have so far been confirmed in Ghana with over 150 traced contacts, therefore, urging the public to be health-conscious in ensuring the disease is contained for the time being.
Universities, Senior High Schools and Junior High Schools, as well as basic schools, have all been ordered to close down on Monday 16th March 2020 by the President as a measure to deal with the spread of the disease.
Meanwhile, WASSCE and BECE candidates would be allowed to attend school under restricted health condition measures being put in place by the Education and Health ministries with support of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
However, efforts to reach authorities of the NIA on the perceived suspension of the exercise have proved futile.
