Two families defied a directive by President suspending all social gatherings in the country by holding a Wedding ceremony in a house at Two Streams a suburb of New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region Saturday, March 21, 2020.
The marriage ceremony which brought together at least 100 people were held in a fenced and gated house of a popular Businessman who is the owner of AFSAM Enterprise in Koforidua. The Businessman is also a Pastor at House of Prayer Church.
Mybrytfmonline reporter who monitored the event reported that, though a handwashing facility was provided at the entrance of the house, the health of the participants inside the house could not be guaranteed as the social distancing protocols were not adhered to inside the house.
The marriage ceremony was also held without playing Music as a way to outsmart law enforcers.
Some angry residents in the community called Police to complain about the danger but the Police failed to turn up.
Australia Media reported March 22, 2020, that dozens of people who attended a wedding earlier this month at a retreat in Stanwell Tops, Australia, have been tested positive for coronavirus.
This evidence among other reports from other countries are indications of the volatility of wedding ceremonies in the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
Generally, residents of New Juaben obeyed ban imposed by both government and New Juaben Traditional Council on social gatherings. Koforidua Jackson Park which used to host at least five separate funeral services at a time every weekend was empty. Legend Hall a social gathering ceremonial ground was also locked up.
As of March 21, 2020, Ghana has recorded 21 confirmed cases of Covid-19 with one death.
Ghana’s President having suspended all social gatherings including Church activities and closed down schools since March 16, 2020, yesterday announced the closure of all borders both by Land, Sea and Air space as enhanced measures to control the spread of the disease.
