Ghana Statistical Service has begun counting Ghanaians to know the current population.
The counting started yesterday night and all persons who happen to be in the territory of Ghana were counted, this includes everyone who spent the night inside their households, people who spent the night at hotels, people in transit, and all outdoor sleepers.
Also, anyone who provides false or wrong information could receive a penalty of not less than 200, or get a jail term of one year, under the criminal offense act (clause 54).
The listing of structures to herald the main exercise began on Sunday, June 13, 2021, and the counting of citizens will continue until 11th July.
Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has disclosed that the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC) will cost the country GHS 521 million.
The 2021 PHC will provide important information to support the evidence-based implementation of the national development agenda and support the tracking of achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2063 of the African Union.
Whether the person is literate, the level of education, economic activities engaged in, otherwise the employment status, job description, occupation, and industry will be of importance to the 67,419 enumerators deployed across the country to physically count, virtually, everybody and structures in a national population and housing census.
At the start of the exercise, 67,419 field officers would be deployed, he said, indicating that “this number is out of the 70,000 qualified personnel selected after training. The remaining 2,581 are standby enumerators who are utilized in cases where there is attrition or where support enumerators are needed.”
