Ghana’s COVID-19 Active cases have increased from 1,174 in the 13th to 2,428 as of 17th December 2021.
The death toll from March 2020 to 17th December stands at 1,265 According to Ghana Health Service Report.
Four regions, i.e., Ashanti -176, Greater- 1,704, Accra and Volta-13, Eastern -13 have the bulk of infections respectively, while cases among travelers at the Kotoka International Airport is 516.
Nine Regions, i.e Ahafo, North East, Oti, Northern, Upper East, Bono East, Savannah, and Western North, at the moment, have zero (0) active cases and the rest have single-digit cases.
On Tuesday, 14th December, the Ghana Health Service took delivery of seventeen million, seven hundred and thirty-six thousand, seven hundred and ten (17,736,710) vaccine doses and expecting an additional eight million, five hundred and twenty-nine thousand, and ninety (8,529,090) doses by the end of the year.
Ghana Health Service has been able to administer only six million, nine hundred and twenty-four thousand, two hundred and sixty-seven (6,924,267) doses out of the 17.7 million we have at our disposal.
The number of persons fully vaccinated stands at 2,005,844, representing 10% of the target, and 5,181,763 representing 25.9% persons who have received at least one dose.
The World Health Organization has urged people to cancel some of their holiday plans to protect public health as the Omicron variant spreads globally.
“An event canceled is better than a life canceled,” said WHO head Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, adding that “difficult decisions” must be made.
Meanwhile, President Nana Akufo-Addo in his 27th COVID-19 address charged Ghanaians to be guided by what transpired last Christmas, where there was a sharp spike in the number of COVID infection cases and deaths in the immediate months of January and February 2021.
He said Ghanaians should avoid the repetition of such a scenario after this year’s Christmas celebration by:
Ensuring that social events are held in open spaces;
Ensuring that attendees wear masks;
Ensuring that social distancing is observed;
Observing enhanced hygiene protocols, such as hand washing and the use of sanitizers; and
Encouraging attendees, as much as possible, to come vaccinated.
