The Chief executive for Denkyembour District in the Eastern Region, Mr. Seth Ofosu Birikorang has said the Assembly may close the main market at Akwatia if women in the place fail to adhere to Social Distancing order by the government.
According to him, the Assembly’s COVID-19 team is monitoring the situation on grounds and educating the market women on the need for physical and social distancing but if they fail to comply, the market will close until further notice.
In an interview, Mr. Seth Ofosu Birikorang said even though the District has not recorded any case of the deadly disease but they are abiding by government restrictions orders and precautions from health expects to avert the spread to his District.
He said the Assembly’s COVID-19 team members have been visiting markets and lorry stations in the District weekly and they will hold a meeting after another visit on Thursday, 16th April 2020 and see the way forward.
The DCE commended drivers and passengers for abiding by social distancing orders and urged people in his area to adhere by the government restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19.
In a related development: the West Akyem Municipal Assembly has created a temporal market in Asamankese Methodist park to divide market women in the central market in Asamankese as part of measure to ensure social distance in fight against the spread of coronavirus.
Fishmongers are expected to use the temporal place effectively, Thursday, 16th April 2020 while others will continue to use the main market until further notice.
