The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources has reminded Ghanaians that the free water supply for lifeline customers ends on June 30, 2021.
A statement issued by the Ministry urged “the general public is to take note. Let us conserve treated water as well as protect and preserve our water bodies,”
Free Water intervention, which had initially been announced to span 3 months from 1st April to 31st June 2020, was extended on two separate occasions in the year 2020 from 1st July to 30th September 2020 and from 1st October to 31st December 2020.
In January 2021, the policy was maintained for lifeline consumers, especially those who consume less than 5m (1,100 gallons) of water per month, from January to 31st March 2021, and further extended from 1st April to 30th June 2021.
The government extended the free water and electricity intervention again for lifeline consumers to June ending this year.
Then caretaker Minister for Finance, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, presenting the 2021 budget statement and economic policies of the government in Parliament on the theme: “Completion, Consolidation and Continuation”, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said the decision to extend the program is to lessen the plight of the vulnerable.
“I am happy to announce that His Excellency the President has approved the continuation of the provision of free water to up to 5 cubic meters that are 1000 gallons per month to vulnerable groups,” he said.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu added: “In addition, we will continue to provide electricity to lifeline consumers up to the end of June 2021 when it is expected that many Ghanaians would have been vaccinated.”
