Accra, July 1, 2025 — The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is expected to appear before Parliament today, Tuesday, July 1, 2025, to provide an update on the current state of COVID-19 in Ghana amid growing concerns over a recent resurgence of cases.
The minister is scheduled to deliver a comprehensive briefing at 2:00 PM in Parliament, where he will present detailed information on the country’s public health response, level of preparedness, and the latest data on infections, vaccination efforts, and surveillance mechanisms.
This parliamentary appearance comes in the wake of reports indicating a rise in COVID-19 cases at the University of Ghana. On Monday, June 23, the university officially confirmed a resurgence of the virus on its Legon campus, sparking concerns among health officials, students, and the general public.
In a statement released on Thursday, June 26, the university’s health directorate disclosed that both suspected and confirmed cases had been recorded within the university community. As a result, the institution has reactivated several key health protocols, including mandatory mask-wearing in enclosed spaces, temperature checks at entry points, and increased testing for individuals showing symptoms.
The statement emphasized the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation from students, faculty, and staff to help contain the spread of the virus. It also encouraged individuals to report symptoms promptly and adhere to all safety measures outlined by health authorities.
As part of today’s briefing, Minister Akandoh is also expected to update lawmakers on Ghana’s readiness to handle a potential nationwide spike in cases, including hospital capacity, testing capabilities, availability of vaccines, and the status of emergency response teams.
