The Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben South, Isaac Appaw Gyasi, says coronavirus is having a toll on businesses predicting economic turmoil in post-COVID-19 crises.
The New Juaben South Municipal Assembly, for instance, has taken many stringent measures including suspension of non-food trading in three major markets in the municipality for two weeks. Apart from affecting income and profit margins, the municipal assembly’s revenue projections would be disrupted.
The MCE says “COVID-19 is extensively leading to disruption of business activities in Ghana and across the globe which when recedes, may lead to severe economic turmoil”.
On Monday, April 13th April 2020 the Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development also MP for New Juaben North Constituency, Nana Agyei Boateng, and the Municipal Chief Executive of New Juaben South, Isaac Appaw-Gyasi, led a team to interact and inspect adherence of social distancing and other COVID-19 preventive and control practices the three main market centers in Koforidua.
The team admonished the traders to inculcate the frequent washing of hands, application of alcohol-based hand sanitizers and try as much as possible to stay at home and practice social distancing.
The team led by the Deputy Minister further ordered traders and squatters at unauthorized selling points in and around the markets to vacate to their designated stalls. This call was necessitated by the team observing that most of the traders had abandoned their stalls and rather selling in the lanes and on the streets creating mobility difficulties and overcrowded amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
The Markets’ Queen Mothers were tasked to supervise their members to observe the protocols of the mortiferous COVID-19 we are bedeviled with.
Among the team were Nananom who represented Prof. Emeritus Oti Boateng, Regional Director of NADMO, Mr. Kwame Koduah, Municipal Environmental and Sanitation Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Tetteh, Municipal Police Command and His Men, Municipal Chief Guide, Media, some Honourable Assembly Members and Staff of the Assembly.
