Former Ghanaian Minister of Trade and Industry Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has voiced grave reservations about the NPP’s capacity to safeguard the public coffers should they hold onto power following the 2024 elections.
The NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, recently urged Ghanaians to trust him to protect the country’s finances during a youth engagement, which stoked Spio-Garbrah’s skepticism.
Spio-Garbrah said that the NPP had been “looting” public cash and mismanaging state resources in an interview on Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV.
He also used the occasion to support the legitimacy of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), saying that if elected, they will maintain responsibility and openness in the use of public finances.
Using the argument that change is necessary to guarantee responsible governance and economic stability, Spio-Garbrah makes a compelling case for voters to reject the NPP in the 2024 elections.
“NDC is not there to steal the public purse, the president of Ghana [Akufo-Addo] said I will protect the public purse, with Dr Bawumia next to him. Have they protected the public purse, they have looted the public purse, that is what they have done, looted, everywhere they steal anything, they can steal.”
He urged Dr. Bawumia to reevaluate his goals and voiced serious concerns about his chances of becoming president.
Given that Bawumia is now serving as Vice President, Mr. Spio-Garbrah pointed to Ghana’s exchange rate as proof that he is unfit for the job.
“Bawumia will never be president if he continues like that, his own party can make him the president if they can. He’s not going to win this election, I don’t know what his career plans are. Why doesn’t he talk about the economy, that is what Ghanaians are interested in.
“If the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you, that is his famous quote and the exchange rate has exposed him repeatedly.” He stated.
