Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s criticism of the recently implemented Dumsor Levy has been met with resistance from Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, who claims that the former NPP administration imposed more than 30 different taxes during its eight years in power.
On Saturday, June 7, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu made the remarks on Joy News’ Newsfile show.
“I have heard Bawumia waxing lyrical about this tax. If his government had imposed just E-levy, Ghanaians wouldn’t have risen against it. They imposed over 30 taxes on Ghanaians in the eight years that they governed,” he remarked, dismissing Dr Bawumia’s attacks as hypocritical and politically motivated.
During his “Thank You Tour” in the Central Region, Dr. Bawumia accused the NDC government of treachery by removing the unpopular E-levy and implementing what he called a “Dumsor Levy.”
He cautioned Ghanaians to expect more taxes and that the action was evidence that the NDC had misled them during the 2024 election campaign.
Petroleum products are subject to a GH¢1 per litre tax under the new levy, which was implemented by the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
It seeks to obtain US$1.2 billion in fuel for thermal power generation and generate enough cash to pay off the US$3.1 billion in debt owed by the energy sector.
The measure has drawn harsh criticism from the minority, who have referred to it as a “predatory tax” that was enacted in a hurry and without sufficient consultation or transparency.
