The newly enstooled Paramount Chief of New Juaben traditional area Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III on Thursday December 22, 2022 hosted a tennis ball competition at his palace as part of his commitment to reviving the sports in Koforidua.
Koforidua is known for its strength in tennis ball sports.
It has produced great local and international table tennis ball players such as the only qualified Ghanaian male Olympian in table tennis Isaac Opoku alias Asawa.
Historically, development of table tennis sports in Koforidua was piniored by the late Omanhene of New Juaben Daasebre Kwaku Boateng many decades ago.
Same support was not sustained after his death affecting the sports in Koforidua despite individuals effort to hold the forth.
But the new Omanhene of New Juaben Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III has reiterated his commitment to restoring the past glory of tennis ball sports in Koforidua to create both local and international stars.
The chief therefore opened the palace for table tennis competition as part of the Akwasidae Kese celebration. It brought together both both male and female upcoming table tennis players and old players in the traditional area.
The Omanhene and the Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong played the the exhibition match.
The Regional Minister pledged to join the Omanhene to support the tennis ball activities in Koforidua.
Felix Adjetey Sowah ,Chairman of New Juaben Tennis ball club said Koforidua is the hub of table tennis ball sports in Ghana which continue to produce great players for Ghana for international competitions such as the Olympics game.
He however appealed to stakeholders to provide training center for the tennis club to help train new talents being hunted in schools in the new Juaben.
Theophilus Amoh defeated James Marfo to emerged winner of the competition.
