The was timely intervention by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), an electricity transmission company in Ghana following an unauthorized excavation by a group of Chinese nationals working under high-tension power lines in Ayawaso West.
This incident, which raised serious safety concerns, involved workers operating heavy machinery on land owned by GRIDCo, located along Shiashie Street near South Legon, opposite the Ghana Water Booster Station and close to the University of Ghana Medical Hospital.
Speaking to the press, Mr. Charles Adu Gyamfi, a concerned resident of the area paid a glowing praise to the electricity transmission company in Ghana for its timely intervention.
According to Mr. Adu-Gyamfi officials of GRIDCo took the decision to halt the unauthorized excavation by the group of Chinese nationals beneath the high-tension lines following reports of serious safety violations and a disregard for safety guidelines by residents in the area.
The concerned resident continued that he was shocked to the bones when workers returned a week later, this time escorted by a group of municipal guards believed to be from the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly.
Although GRIDCo’s initial response halted the excavation, Charles reported that the workers returned a week later, this time escorted by a group of municipal guards believed to be from the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly.
This development he disclosed caused the anger of GRIDCo’s task force which arrested and subsequently detained the workers on-site as well as dismantling an office container set up as a base for the operations.
Mr. Adu-Gyamfi further noted that the Chinese nationals claimed to have received permission from the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly, with the presence of assembly guards lending credibility to their claims.
However, inquiries revealed that Hon. Clement Wilkinson, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga West Assembly, along with the area’s Assemblyman, Mr. Eugene Amoa Darko, was involved in bringing the workers to the site.
Even though the excavator remains on-site as at the time of filing this report, GRIDCo has since ordered the workers to fill back the trenches and leave the area to maintain safety and compliance with national protocols.
When contacted on the matter, the Ayawaso West MCE, Hon. Sandra Owusu Ahinkorah denied any involvement in the excavation, distancing her office from the operation.
This incident has brought attention to unauthorized access to restricted areas and emphasizes the importance of institutions adhering to safety standards.
