Danquah-Dombo-Busia Tradition has been with NPP for selecting its Presidential Candidates since 1992. The NPP, which has been a tradition of Danquah-Busia-Dombo, was formed in 28th July, 1992.
The NPP as a party has travelled a long way as far as Politics and development of Ghana is concerned. The likes of Danquah, Dombo, Paa Grant, Edward Akufo Addo, Busia, Adu Boahen etc all of blessed memories can be referred to as the founding fathers of the Party.
Simon Diedong Dombo was a traditional chief from (Duori) in the Upper West Region of Ghana. He was enskinned as Chief of Duori (Duori Naa) on April 17, 1949. Chief S. D. Dombo played a pioneering role in the Gold Coast Legislative Council and the fight for Ghana’s independence.
Chief Dombo represented the Northern Territories through the vehicle of the Northern Peoples Party (NPP), a party of which he was the Leader and Co-founder. Chief S. D. Dombo became Ghana’s first official Opposition Leader in his capacity as Leader of the NPP.
Following the tradition of the party, NPP got its first leader from the Busia side being Mr. Agyekum Kuffour who was the Presidential Candidate for the party in the year 2000. He took power from the Late J.J.Rawlings and led the party in government from 2000-2008.
Though the NDC who was then opposition took power from 2008-2016 but the tradition was still ultimate to guide the NPP Party in its restructuring and reorganization. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was elected to lead the Party to capture power in 2016 using same tradition.
It is evidence that, Nana Akufo-Addo is from the Danquah side of the tradition. Nana Akufo-Addo took power back in 2016 and in 2020 again.
It is therefore emphatically clear that we cannot forgo the Tradition the Party use to select its candidates to lead. Following the historical paradigm of the Party, there have been a representative from Danquah and Busia leaving Dombo.
It is a great important to go by the tradition of the Party to take a candidate from the side of Dombo (A leader from a Northern side). We have no doubt than to take Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia(A political Stalwart) from the side of Dombo to lead the Party in the 2024 election. It is a great decision of the NPP party to break the eight to retain power.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been in the Forefront of the Party since his nomination as running mate for then Presidential Candidate Nana Akufo-Addo in 2008 and for the past 13 years, Dr. Bawumia has consistently maintained touch with Party and grassroots across the country.
He has travelled extensively throughout the various constituencies preaching party policies to members during campaigns and Government policies whilst in power. He has probably done several tours across the country in a few years meeting party grassroot members.
Notwithstanding, Dr. Bawumia has visited almost all the constituencies as the Lead campaigner from 2008 to 2020. Thus, it will be easier for him to reconnect with Non-NPP and neutral voters as a presidential candidate in 2024.
Dr. Bawumia has become resolute and firm leader for the Party across every angle and he’s loved by many because of his Humility and tolerance. The Candidature of Dr. Bawumia has been a big threat to the opposition NDC because he (Dr. Bawumia) cannot be matched with anyone in NDC. Let’s all solidly rally behind him in the course of breaking the lofty task ahead.
