Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor at two separate meetings, engaged Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) working in the extractive and environmental sectors, as well as journalists from both the print and broadcast media.
The purpose of these engagements was to update them on efforts being made by the Government to tackle the illegal mining menace, solicit their views and inputs on the measures being implemented, and ask for their support, not only for the fight against illegal mining but for the management and utilisation of the natural resources of our country.
The open, frank, and cordial interaction gave all of us more insight into the canker, particularly the challenges in the various communities, and how to carry the whole nation along, in our fight against illegal mining.
It was agreed, at the end of these meetings, that our interaction will be regular, to share ideas and information, and work together to come to grips with this matter. I thanked them for their advocacy and called for their continuous support in this national exercise.
The fight against illegal mining is a process, and cannot be done by Government alone, but requires our collective efforts.
The commitment of the Government of President Akufo-Addo to this fight is unflinching, and we will continue to work with all stakeholders, to ensure that we build an environmentally-sound small scale mining industry that contributes meaningfully to the national economy.
