The Public Relations Officer for Nsawam Prisons has debunked rumors of prison officers not being paid and being cheated on after covering for election duties.
Some Prison Officers have complained that the Prison authorities have not fulfilled their payment responsibilities after they promised to pay them a sum of GHȼ 500 for covering for the elections.
An anonymous prison officer revealed that the prison authorities have not paid their monies to them and the few that have received the money also didn’t get it in full.
According to the officer, their expectations were not met since the money they promised had been reduced.
“They will let you sign thinking you are going to get your money in full and after signing they pay only half of the money, it’s been a week after elections and most of us haven’t received our monies”
Speaking on Dadi FM 101.1 with Abena Pokuaa Ahwenee, DSP Adamu Abdul Latif said that there was no intention to cheat any prison officer.
According to him, security duties for election are not a core function of the prison officers, it is solely for policemen to ensure security during the election period, but Prison officers are deployed to assist the police.
He said that because of that, not all prison officers get to go on duty because they have to stay behind and cover up the absence of the others.
Adamu Abdul added that the salary was solely for the officers who went on duty which they considered wrong so they just decided to take a percentage of it for the others.
“We didn’t intend to cheat on anyone, but we decided to be fair to the other officers who didn’t go on duty but had to overwork, that are why our authorities decided to take a percentage from the money and pay the others so there hasn’t been any cheating like they are saying.
He beckoned all officers who haven’t received their monies yet to go to the office for it because they are still paying them.
