The re-arrest of Aisha Huang despite the fact that she was expelled in 2019 for participating in legitimate mining in Ghana has been characterized as stunning news by a former minister of lands and natural resources, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini.
“It clearly demonstrates that the decision [to deport her], was wrong,” Mr Fuseini said.
She has been charged with illegally mining without a permit, selling and buying minerals without a permit, and other offences following her recent arrest.
The Chinese woman was known as the “galamsey queen” due to her popularity there.
When news of her expulsion surfaced while she was facing charges for indulging in galamsey, she sparked debate in political circles.
Later, President Akufo-Addo called the choice disappointing.
According to reports, Aisha crossed a land border from a neighbouring nation into Ghana.
She also obtained a Ghana card in February 2022 when she arrived, using the new name Huang En.
“On what basis was she given a non-resident identification card? You need to prove with documents that you are legally resident in Ghana [before you are given Ghana card],” Mr Fuseini said.
