The Eastern Regional Treasurer of Ghana National Association of Teachers, GNAT, Hadjia Ruckaiyah Issah, has called on the government to declare October 5, which is celebrated as World Teachers’ Day as a national holiday for teachers in the country.
According to her, teachers in Ghana are sacrificing a lot for the country hence deserves to be celebrated especially during the day.
She said this when Nkrukan Local of GNAT organized a match on the streets of Nkurakan and held a durbar to celebrate World Teachers’ Day 2021.
The Nkurakan Local Chairman of GNAT Dzramado Emmanuel said Politicians should respect teachers in the country and reciprocate the sacrifices they make daily.
He said the tag that teachers cannot be millionaires is so unfair and disrespectful. According to him teachers if supported can make it everywhere they are.
He called for the provision of Teaching and Learning Materials to help deliver quality education in rural areas in particular.
Dzramado Emmanuel mentioned that the lack of accommodations in many rural Communities compels teachers to commute long distances to schools hence appealed to the government to help provide accommodation for teachers.
This year’s World Teachers’ day was on the theme: Teacher Wanted: Reclaiming Teaching and Learning for Human-centered recovery”.
