Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order in conflict-prone areas, particularly those affected by chieftaincy disputes.
Delivering an update on the defence sector on Monday, July 21, Dr. Boamah emphasized the need to clearly separate criminal activity from traditional matters, warning that individuals who exploit such tensions to commit crimes will be prosecuted.
“We shall always separate crimes from traditional matters, enabling us to deal appropriately and legally with criminals who foment trouble in the name of chieftaincy conflict,” he said.
The Minister acknowledged ongoing instability in areas like Bawku and Alavanyo but assured the public that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) remains fully alert and engaged.
“The situation in Bawku and Alavanyo and their immediate surroundings remains volatile. The Ghana Armed Forces is actively monitoring and has put in place robust mechanisms to swiftly contain any escalation in the interest of the people and a lasting resolution through dialogue,” he noted.
Dr. Boamah reiterated the government’s preference for dialogue as the path to sustainable peace but made it clear that those who incite violence under the guise of tradition will face the full force of the law.
His remarks come amid renewed tensions in the Bawku enclave, raising fears of potential unrest in nearby communities.
