The Minister of Education, Mr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has said in parliament that a degree is now required before one can teach at the basic school level.
He made this known when he was in parliament to give his update and answer some questions which he will be asked concerning education in the country on Tuesday, 11 August 2020.
According to the Educational Minister, basic school education is the basic foundation that every child needs to help build a bright future due to this the quality of teachers needs to be checked to help build a bright future for children in the country.
“We have in our focus on teacher reforms taken the necessary steps to upgrade all our Colleges of Education to university colleges to award Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), degrees, following a review of the teacher education curriculum into the standards-based curriculum,” he told Parliament, in Accra.
Saying that the government has introduced a new yearly allowance for professional teachers which ranges from GHC600 to GHC1,200 which is referred to as the Professional Teacher Allowance.
Adding that the implementation of the student curriculum had begun in 2018, with each college of education in Ghana is affiliated to one of the public universities in Ghana.
Revealing that the allowance is to help invest the teacher improve themselves and upgrade the skills they have and be abreast of the modern trend which will help improve the learning of the children.
