The Deputy Minister of Transport, Hon. Dorcas Toffey, has outlined key interventions being implemented to address traffic congestion and transportation challenges in Accra.
Speaking to the media, Hon. Toffey revealed that the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, recently visited the Ministry of Transport and held extensive engagements with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport unions. According to her, these discussions have led to significant improvements in the sector.
She added that, as part of her duties, she personally visited some of the most congested areas in Accra to better understand the challenges on the ground. She explained that the Ministry has ensured the deployment of additional buses, while transport unions have agreed to reduce fares in order to increase the number of vehicles operating within the system.
Hon. Toffey further disclosed that new fleets of vehicles are expected to arrive soon. She noted that during her visit to Egypt, she inspected Metro Mass Transit buses, and arrangements have been made for 300 of these buses to be introduced into Ghana’s transport system.
She announced that hundreds of the buses are expected to arrive in Ghana by 15th February 2026, with an additional 100 buses arriving a month later. By April 2026, a total of 300 buses are expected to be operational. She also stated that the Ministry has engaged private investors who have expressed interest in partnering with the government to bring in more vehicles.
According to the Deputy Minister, these interventions are aimed at ensuring that traffic congestion becomes a thing of the past. She explained that when the current administration took office, many vehicles were in poor condition. However, efforts have been made to rehabilitate the fleet, with 15 Metro Mass buses recently repaired. She noted that Metro Mass Transit currently has over 135 vehicles in operation.
Hon. Dorcas Toffey emphasized that the Minister of Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, and his deputy are working tirelessly to revive the transport sector, assuring the public that very soon, the positive impact of their efforts will be evident.
