Despite government’s announcement to pay GH¢4 billion out of Ghc13 billion allocation made this year to clear debt owed road contractors by end of July to return to sites ,a group calling itself Kloma Hengme Association has scheduled July 24,2025 to embark on a demonstration over abandoned Odumase to Kpone road.
The group has written to formally notify the police in accordance with the Public Order Act, their intention to embark on a peaceful protest to register ” displeasure at the deplorable state of the Somanya-Odumase-Kpong highway, a major road artery that connects several communities and serves as an economic lifeline for the people of Yilo and Manya Krobo”
They explained in the letter that the worsening condition of this highway has become a daily source of frustration, hardship, and danger for motorists, commuters, traders, students, and residents.
“The dust pollution, potholes, and overall deterioration are not only damaging vehicles and threatening livelihoods but also endangering lives. While reconstruction works commenced around July 2024, the project has stalled since the beginning of this year. The contractor is no longer on site, and the suffering of our people continues”.
They assured that that the protest will be peaceful, non-violent, and orderly, and ” we are willing to cooperate fully with the Ghana Police Service to ensure public safety and traffic management during the demonstration”.
The Somanya -Odumase -Kpong road was awarded to contract in 2024 by the previous government but the contractor abandoned site in July same year due to government failure to pay the contractor.
The previous government indebtedness to suppliers and contractors stands at astounding GH¢67.5 billion, according to the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.
