The Government of Ghana has been advised to maintain the betting and e-levy in order to generate enough funds to run the economy as expected.
Development Economist, Dr. Ayerakwa was of the view that scrapping such taxes could affect government’s revenue mobilisation and adversely have a toll on the economy.
In an interview with Kwamina Sam Biney on Bryt Adekyee Mu Nsem, Dr. Ayerakwa indicated the need to widen up the tax net to ensure most Ghanaians pay taxes to help in the development of the country.
He made a case by urging a collaboration between the Ghana Revenue Authority and the Rent Control Department so as to generate revenue from rent to add up to the national coffers.
Dr. Ayerakwa was responding to comments made by the Minister-Designate during his appearance to the Appointments Committee of Parliament on government intention to scrap some taxes it describe as nuisance.
The NDC prior to the 2024 elections promised to scrap the e-levy and betting taxes when elected to power and therefore expected to go by the pledge once the party is in power.
