On Bryt FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show with host Kwamina Sam Baney, Lawyer Yaw Seberh expressed worry about the recent dismissal of the Chief Justice.
According to him, similar situations had occurred in the past. He recalled that in the 2000s, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan served as Electoral Commissioner during both NPP and NDC administrations, and even under former President John Kufuor. He noted that during President Mahama’s tenure, Charlotte Osei was appointed to head the Electoral Commission, but her removal sparked heated political debates.
Lawyer Seberh argued that those who once celebrated Charlotte Osei’s removal are now saddened by the dismissal of the Chief Justice, describing the development as troubling for Ghana’s democratic process.
He questioned why such dismissals appear politically motivated and cautioned that it undermines confidence in the judiciary and other democratic institutions.
“Our last stop as a nation is the Supreme Court. If parties no longer trust the courts to deliver justice, then citizens may be tempted to take the law into their own hands. This is dangerous for our democracy,” he said.
He further stressed that leaders must strengthen, not weaken, the judiciary and other independent institutions. In his view, the sacking of the Chief Justice creates the perception that the rule of law is being ignored for political convenience.
Lawyer Seberh concluded by urging government and stakeholders to protect the integrity of the judiciary and ensure that political differences do not influence the country’s democratic institutions.
