DMAC Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Koforidua, has partnered with Star Ghana to deploy twenty-eight (28) observers for the District Level Election in New Juaben South in Eastern Region.
These observers have undergone training on electoral laws, ensuring their ability to monitor and ensure adherence to these laws for a free, transparent, and peaceful polling process.
They will be properly identified with Tag around their neck as observers.
This deployment is part of the “Kofcity Youth We Dey Project” under Star Ghana Foundation’s “Our City Project,” known as #kofkro, funded by the Fondation Botnar under the Action for Youth Development (AfYD).
The project aims to strengthen the capacity of the youth in New Juaben, encouraging their active involvement in governance at the assembly level.
According to Edmund Atweri Duodu, Executive Director of DMAC Foundation, as a proactive measure, the Kofcity Youth Advisory Council engaged with aspiring assembly members weeks ago.
They discussed challenges within their electoral areas, emphasizing the importance of addressing these challenges in their broader plans once elected.
The District Level Elections (DLEs) are set to take place today, December 19, with a staggering 66,257 candidates vying for assembly and unit committee positions.
The competition spans 6,215 electoral areas across 216 metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies (MMDAs).
Hon. Dan Botwe, the Minister for Local Government Decentralization and Rural Development, has encouraged citizens to actively participate in these crucial elections.
Expressing his concern at the Odwira festival in Adukrom-Akuapem, Minister Dan Botwe highlighted the decline in voter turnout since the inception of district-level elections in 1998.
He projected a minimum 50% voter turnout target for this year’s elections.
