Rev. Dr. Joyce Aryee, a member of the National Cathedral Board of Trustees and the Executive Director of Salt and Light Ministries, has stated that no woman should tolerate domestic abuse.
She thinks the act is wrong and that the woman shouldn’t have to go through so much agony and shame.
Rev. Dr. Joyce Aryee, speaking to Eunice Tornyi on e.TV Ghana’s African Women’s Voices, said, “First and foremost, you should report this to your parents, and if it becomes too violent, you should report it to the police, because there has to be some restraint if you’re being beaten because no woman should accept domestic violence.”
According to her, women are prone to accepting it the first time it occurs because they may believe the male is overly furious, but if it occurs twice or three times, they should not accept it for the sake of their health and the man’s.
“If you keep accepting it, one day if he beats you and kills you, he will be a murderer, so don’t accept it.” Also, I believe the church is finally taking these issues seriously, and I am aware of other female-led organizations that are allowing domestically abused wives to relocate to a shelter where they would be cared for, among other things,” she stated.
If the marriage is resolved and the woman returns home after counseling, the male must also be assisted in overcoming his anger issues that cause him to be aggressive, according to the woman of God.
Dr. Arye remarked, “it became such a significant issue to the extent that now a lot of people here in Ghana who are suffering from it are coming out to get help,” citing the late Nigerian gospel performer Osinachi, who died as a result of domestic violence from her husband.
“It’s a good thing her case became such a big deal, and that it happened to be in the church.” So I believe God wants us to deal with it, and that’s why he brought it up, because if he hadn’t, it wouldn’t have become a church issue, and I don’t believe we should tolerate it,” she stated emphatically.
